Foxconn Eyes Expansion with Plans for Major Battery Energy Storage Project in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu, Nov 27 (KNN) Foxconn, India’s largest contract manufacturer, is set to embark on an ambitious project in Tamil Nadu, where it plans to establish the world’s second-largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to allocate 200 acres of land near Manalur in Tiruvallur district, about 50 kilometers north of Chennai, for the project.
According to The Economic Times, discussions between Foxconn and the government are in the final stages, with an incentive package already offered to the company.
The move aligns with Foxconn's strategic shift towards diversifying its operations in India, particularly into energy-related sectors. In August 2024, Chairman Young Liu, during a visit to India, outlined the company’s new focus on electric vehicles (EVs), energy, and digital health, marking a pivot from its traditional focus on smartphones.
Liu emphasised Foxconn’s interest in establishing a strong foothold in battery technology as part of its broader EV ambitions.
The company’s push into Battery Energy Storage Systems is a key aspect of this, given the growing importance of energy storage solutions in the global shift to renewable energy and the electric vehicle market.
Foxconn’s energy storage initiative is part of its larger “3+3 strategy,” which targets three key industries—electric vehicles, digital health, and robotics—each valued at over USD 1.4 trillion, with expected growth rates exceeding 20 percent annually.
Liu’s recent remarks suggest that the company is moving quickly toward implementing these strategies in India, a market that presents considerable growth potential.
This proposed BESS project would bolster Foxconn’s position as a key player in the energy storage space, with its first BESS unit in Taiwan nearing completion despite weather-related delays.
With Foxconn’s expansion plans gaining momentum, Tamil Nadu could soon become a central hub for cutting-edge energy solutions in India.
