GAIL To Set Up 700 MW Solar Capacity With BESS In UP, Maharashtra
New Delhi, Apr 14 (KNN) GAIL (India) Limited has approved an investment of Rs 3,800 crore to set up 700 MW of solar power projects in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, marking a significant push to expand its renewable energy portfolio and meet captive power requirements through green sources, according to company statements.
The investment includes a 600 MW solar project at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, which will be integrated with a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to ensure stable power supply. The project is primarily aimed at meeting the energy needs of GAIL’s petrochemical plant at Pata in Auraiya district, according to ANI.
In Maharashtra, the company will develop an additional 100 MW solar project in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, equipped with a 22 MWh BESS. This facility will cater to the captive energy requirements of the PDH-PP plant at Usar in Raigad district. The integration of storage systems is expected to address intermittency issues associated with solar power and enable reliable round-the-clock energy availability.
Commenting on the development, Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta said, "GAIL's installed renewable energy capacity shall increase substantially to over 1,000 MW from the current 147 MW upon commissioning of these projects."
The expansion aligns with GAIL’s broader strategy to strengthen energy security while advancing its environmental commitments, including Net Zero targets, and supports India’s ongoing energy transition.
Separately, GAIL has entered into a long-term charter agreement with Alpha Gas for an LNG carrier through its affiliate Pantheon Maritime Services. The vessel, Energy Fidelity, with a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres, features advanced propulsion and emission-reduction technologies aimed at improving fuel efficiency and strengthening India’s LNG supply chain.
The combined initiatives reflect GAIL’s dual focus on expanding clean energy capacity and reinforcing its role in the country’s energy infrastructure.
