Govt Steps Up Measures To Ensure Grid Stability Amid Rising Renewable Capacity

New Delhi, Mar 30 (KNN) The government has undertaken multiple measures to ensure grid stability amid rising renewable energy (RE) capacity, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

The minister said steps such as setting up Regional Energy Management Centres for real-time monitoring, implementing Automatic Generation Control, and deploying advanced technologies like STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are being taken.

Measures including SCADA systems under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme and improved weather forecasting with Indian Space Research Organisation are also supporting grid management.

Regulatory frameworks by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and grid codes mandate technical standards, frequency control participation, and integration of energy storage and hybrid systems to manage variability.

Transmission Expansion Plans
The government has outlined transmission requirements under the National Electricity Plan to support over 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 and 900 GW by 2035-36. Under the Green Energy Corridor scheme, significant transmission infrastructure has already been commissioned to evacuate renewable power.

Focus on Energy Storage
To address intermittency, the government is promoting Battery Energy Storage Systems and Pumped Storage Projects through viability gap funding, regulatory reforms, and incentives such as PLI schemes.

Waivers on inter-state transmission charges and guidelines for renewable energy with storage aim to ensure reliable power supply.
