India Advances CCUS Mission; Experts Advocate for Long-Term LNG Contracts

New Delhi, Aug 27 (KNN) India is in the final stages of developing its Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) Mission roadmap, a key initiative to achieve net-zero emissions.

Rajnath Ram, Adviser for Energy, Natural Resources & Environment at NITI Aayog, emphasised the importance of CCUS in meeting climate goals during the 3rd Energy Summit of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

The government aims to increase natural gas's share in the energy mix to 15% by 2030, requiring consumption to rise to approximately 180–200 billion cubic meters.

Experts highlight three priorities to achieve this goal: securing long-term LNG supply contracts, ensuring affordability, and expanding domestic production through compressed biogas (CBG). Ram also stressed the need for geological surveys to reduce dependence on LNG imports.

Rajarshi Gupta, Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Ltd, stated that ONGC plans to source 5 million tonnes of LNGfrom diverse sources, including Henry Hub and crude-based LNG, to manage market volatility.

The finalisation of the CCUS Mission roadmap and focus on long-term LNG contracts underline India’s commitment to a sustainable and secure energy future.

This roadmap is seen as a crucial step in the country’s transition towards cleaner energy while balancing economic and energy security priorities.
