India’s Green Hydrogen Offtake Commitments Reach 5.56 Lakh Tonnes Per Year By October 2026

New Delhi, Oct 29 (KNN) Indian companies have signed green hydrogen offtake agreements covering 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen equivalent as of October 2026, with more than 70 per cent of the contracted volumes earmarked for exports.

In 2026, companies signed 18 new offtake agreements for more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen equivalent, according to details released under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The projects linked to the signed commitments are expected to require investments exceeding Rs 90,000 crore, or approximately USD 9.5 billion.

Among the major agreements, Reliance Industries has signed a long-term supply and purchase agreement with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation for green ammonia worth more than USD 3 billion, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028.

AM Green has signed an offtake agreement with Germany’s Uniper for 2.5 lakh MTPA of green ammonia and a binding agreement with Japan’s JERA for 70,000 MTPA.

It was also selected in the Asian lot of the H2Global auction to supply renewable ammonia to Germany under a purchase agreement worth at least EUR 585 million over 10 years, with initial deliveries expected in 2029.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Japan’s ITOCHU have formed a special purpose vehicle for supplying 3 lakh tonnes per annum of green ammonia, with deliveries expected to start in December 2029. ACME Group has signed an agreement with Japan’s IHI for 4.88 lakh tonnes per annum of green ammonia and another agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical for 1 lakh tonnes per annum of green methanol.

On the domestic front, agreements under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme cover the production and supply of 6.7 lakh MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser units. Projects have also been awarded for supplying 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to refineries operated by Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Numaligarh Refinery.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved with an initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore through FY 2029-30.

It targets annual green hydrogen production of at least 5 million metric tonnes by 2030, alongside 125 GW of renewable energy capacity addition, investments exceeding Rs 8 lakh crore, more than six lakh jobs and an annual reduction of 50 million tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions.
