India’s Wind Power Capacity To Double From 51 GW To 107 GW By 2030: GWEC

New Delhi, Aug 27 (KNN) India’s wind power capacity is expected to more than double from the current 51 GW to 107 GW by 2030, according to the India Wind Report 2025 released by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) on Tuesday.

Launched in New Delhi in the presence of MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, the report noted that global assessments indicate India may require between 121 GW and 164 GW of wind capacity by 2030 to meet its renewable energy targets.

“India is executing one of the world’s most ambitious energy transitions — not just to secure our own sustainable future but to shape the global clean energy narrative. We are committed to installing 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, including 100 GW from wind,” said Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy.

India’s total wind potential is estimated at 1,164 GW, of which only 4.5 percent has been tapped.

A higher share of wind power, the report said, can reduce costs, strengthen grid stability, and improve utilisation of transmission infrastructure.

GWEC estimates that scaling installations to 8 GW annually could generate about 1.16 lakh jobs, while a 15 GW annual pace could create 1.54 lakh jobs by 2030.

The report also highlighted India’s growing role in global manufacturing. The country has emerged as the third-largest wind equipment production hub, with capacity rising from 12 GW in 2022 to 20 GW in 2024. By 2030, India could supply 10 percent of global demand.

The report further recommended addressing grid integration challenges, strengthening renewable purchase obligation (RPO) compliance, and aligning bidding mechanisms with state-level power offtake requirements to achieve the projected growth.
