L&T Expands Nuclear Ambitions with India’s 100 GW Growth Plan

New Delhi, Feb 15 (KNN) Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is poised to play a crucial role in India's ambitious nuclear power expansion while also exploring global opportunities in the sector, according to Subramanian Sarma, the company's Whole-time Director and President for Energy.

Speaking at India Energy Week, Sarma emphasised L&T’s diverse capabilities in nuclear plant construction and the supply of critical reactor components.

“L&T has different roles to play. We can build nuclear plants as constructors and also supply a lot of critical reactors. These plants are generally not developed in full EPC mode, and there are different elements in the works,” Sarma said.

His statement follows the Indian government’s announcement of a plan to add 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047.

Sarma highlighted L&T’s existing global market access and ongoing discussions with nuclear technology providers for future collaborations in India.

Additionally, the company is engaged in discussions with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India regarding Bharat Small Reactors, for which a request for proposal was recently issued.

L&T is also making significant strides in the green energy space, focusing on green hydrogen and electrolyzer manufacturing. The company is considering external global contracts for blue ammonia, either independently or in partnership with major developers.

Domestically, L&T has acquired land in Kandla and is exploring land acquisition in Odisha to establish facilities near ports for export opportunities. “All investment decisions will be made once we secure firm offtake agreements,” Sarma noted.

Regarding thermal power, Sarma expressed optimism about demand visibility and supply chain management. He stated that any constraints in thermal equipment capacity can be addressed through phased capacity expansion.

L&T’s strategic positioning in nuclear and green energy reflects its commitment to supporting India's energy ambitions while seeking international growth.
