Nigeria and India Collaborate on Renewable Energy Development

New Delhi, Jan 24 (KNN) India and Nigeria have joined forces in a significant move towards solar, wind, and biomass energy development, as evident in the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation on Renewable Energy.

The agreement emphasises the collaborative development of new and renewable energy technologies, including Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Biomass/Bio-energy, Small Hydro, and Capacity building.

The MoU signing took place during the sixth Nigeria-India Joint Commission Meeting, where Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and his Indian counterpart, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, formalised the collaboration.

This meeting, held in Abuja and attended by the Indian Minister of External Affairs, encompassed comprehensive discussions on political, cultural, aviation, trade and investment, developmental partnership, defence and security cooperation, consular matters, regional issues, and multilateral cooperation.

Tuggar highlighted the fruitful deliberations during the joint commission, underscoring the commonalities between Nigeria and India as the two largest democracies in Africa and Asia.

The ministers expressed optimism about the enduring friendship and strengthening relationship between the two populous nations.

Following the MoU signing, Jaishankar remarked on the longstanding and friendly relationship between India and Nigeria, rooted in history and strengthened by recent contacts between their leaderships.

He acknowledged the shared status of being the largest democracies in the world, leading their respective continents.

India holds a prominent position as one of Nigeria's top economic partners, boasting investments of around USD 27 billion and an annual trade turnover estimated between USD 13-15 Billion.

The collaborative efforts are poised to deepen further, with the upcoming seventh Nigeria-India Joint Commission meeting scheduled to be held in India.
