UN Climate Chief Highlights India's Renewable Energy & Economic Growth

New Delhi, Feb 17 (KNN) India's renewable energy sector has emerged as a significant contributor to both environmental sustainability and economic development, creating over one million jobs and representing 7 percent of the global renewable energy workforce, according to recent assessments.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Director Simon Stiell emphasised the sector's expanding potential during his remarks on Sunday.

He specifically highlighted how new manufacturing initiatives and supply chain developments, particularly in the electric vehicle industry, are poised to generate millions of additional employment opportunities, fostering economic growth and shared prosperity across the nation.

Stiell commended India's remarkable progress in solar power deployment, noting the country's achievement of 100 gigawatts (GW) of capacity in record time.

This milestone aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious target of reaching 500 GW in clean energy capacity.

The UN climate chief pointed to the substantial global investment in clean energy, which reached USD 2 trillion last year, emphasising that climate action is driven by commercial and economic interests rather than charitable motives.

The economic benefits of India's renewable energy transition extend beyond job creation, according to Stiell.

Through initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Indian companies are sharing their expertise while capitalising on significant market opportunities.

This investment in clean energy infrastructure has led to reduced energy costs for Indian industries and helped shield consumers from the volatility of global energy markets, potentially mitigating inflationary pressures.

Stiell concluded by highlighting India's potential to leverage these advantages to foster a broader clean industry and manufacturing renaissance.
