EPHC to certify legal procurement of wood for handicrafts

New Delhi, May 16 (KNN) The government has decided to authorise the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts to certify procurement of wood from legal sources for manufacture of handicraft articles by exporters.
“In case of request by the foreign buyer or any other agency on showing due diligence in procurement of wood from legal sources for manufacture of handicraft articles, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) will be authorized agency to issue such certificate,” an official notification said.
During the period 2012-13 there was considerable increase in the export of handicrafts. According to figures quoted by EPCH, the exports of art metal ware, wood wares, hand printed textiles and scarves, embroidered and crocheted goods, shawls as art wares, zari and zari goods, imitation jewellery and miscellaneous handicrafts showed an increasing trend of 27.86 per cent, 75.96 per cent, 34.89 per cent, 18.95 per cent, 76.39 per cent, 19.47 per cent, 76.83 per cent and 49.92 per cent in rupees terms respectively and 12.77 per cent, 55.20 per cent, 18.97 per cent, 4.91 per cent, 55.55 per cent, 5.36 per cent, 55.96 per cent and 32.22 per cent in USD term respectively. Overall an increase in the rupee term was 38.50 per cent and in the USD term was 22.15 per cent.
Established in 1986-87, EPCH is a non-profit organisation, with an objective of promoting, supporting, protecting, maintaining and increasing the export of handicrafts. It is an apex body of handicrafts exporters for promotion of exports of handicrafts from the country.
It has the responsibility of projecting India's image abroad as a reliable supplier of high quality of handicrafts goods and services and ensures the observance of international standards and specification.
The Council has created necessary infrastructure as well as marketing and information facilities, which are availed both by member exporters and importers. (KNN)
