New Delhi, Sept 1 (KNN) The services like banking, transport and other public services across the nation, except running of trains, are likely to be hit as 10 central trade unions will hold nation-wide strike on Wednesday.

The September 2 country-wide strike call was given by 11 central trade unions to protest against the proposed changes in various labour laws. But the BJP-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) later pulled out of the proposed nationwide strike.

The trade unions have decided to continue with the strike call even after Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), one of the largest unions, opted out of the strike.

The trade unions, including Congress-backed INTUC and Left-supported CITU and AITUC, termed BMS's decision as "political" and said it would have minimal impact on the strike.

"All services, except railways, will be affected including banks, transport, civil aviation and gas and oil supply. It will be a peaceful strike," AITUC general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta said.

"The impact of BMS pullout will be minimal on the strike on September 2. The decision of BMS is political," he added.

At a joint press conference, the unions reiterated their strike call and urged BMS to come back to "the united fold of central trade unions' movement".

Dasgupta accused the government of "playing fraud" and said BMS had become a "victim of the fraud". "We believe BMS will not oppose the strike," he said.

Labour unions say the changes proposed by the government in labour laws will throw 70% of the country's workforce out of the ambit of those laws.

An estimated 150 million workers are expected to join the one-day protest, which could be the largest the country has seen in decades.

Central trade union leaders have refused to withdraw the strike call as their recent meeting with a group of ministers failed to yield any breakthrough.

The union leaders have put before the government a 12-point charter of demands.

Earlier, Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya had said that the government has agreed to 7 to 8 of their demands. (KNN Bureau)
