Experts hold panel discussion on Future of trade Multilateralism in the era or Unilateralism

New Delhi, May 5 (KNN) CUTS International organized a panel discussion on Future of Trade Multilateralism in the era of Unilateralism, chaired by Nitin Desai, former under Secretary General of United Nations on May 3rd, 2018.

The panel includes experts from India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar.

For trade multilateralism to work better and gain strength, panel reinforces the faith in the WTO despite of the challenges being faced by the global trade body in the wake of bilateralism and unilateralism.

Unanimously, the panel felt that the attacks on WTO will not sustain as the body has in-built capacity to recover quickly from the difficulties.

Further, it pointed out that the role of WTO is imperative in global governance.

It will have to reform some of its regimes such as the dispute settlement system and incorporate the development dimensions keeping the Sustainable Development Goals, 2030 agenda in mind to improve its wider acceptance, panel suggested.

During the event, CUTS International, founder Secretary General Pradeep Mehta was honoured by Commerce & Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu for his lifetime contribution to consumer welfare in India and across the globe.

In his honour, CUTS International released a book titled- ‘Putting Consumers first - Essays in Honour of Pradeep Mehta’.

In April 2018, the CUTS International launched its 6th overseas centre in Washington DC, the first ever Indian think tank in the US.
