JNPA Waives Storage, Reefer Charges For Middle East-Bound Export Containers

New Delhi, Mar 12 (KNN) The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has announced a waiver of storage or dwell time charges and reefer plug-in charges for Middle East-bound export containers stranded at the port due to ongoing geopolitical disruptions in the region.

The relief measures have been issued through a trade notice following directives from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to mitigate the impact of supply chain disruptions on the export-import (EXIM) community.

Relief Measures

The decision has been taken in line with provisions under the Major Port Authorities Act, 2021 and the tariff policy applicable to major ports, aimed at easing the financial burden on exporters and logistics stakeholders affected by the crisis.

Under the relief measures, JNPA will allow stranded export containers to be stored in terminal container yards until the cargo can be shipped, while waiving charges such as ground rent and reefer plug-in fees.

Temporary Storage and Transshipment

The port authority is also coordinating with customs authorities to facilitate the storage of laden containers from other ports destined for the Middle East as temporary transshipment cargo at JNPA terminals.

In addition, extra storage space is being provided to terminal operators to accommodate the additional cargo resulting from the disruption.

JNPA said the measures aim to support exporters and logistics players by ensuring continuity in trade operations and reducing financial stress during the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that such timely interventions help stabilise logistics operations and provide relief to exporters facing delays and rising supply chain costs.
