Farmers' Association seeks more investment in irrigation from new Govt

New Delhi, Jun 9 (KNN)  In a pre-budget discussion with the Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, the Consortium of Indian Farmers’ Association has highlighted priority issues related to the agriculture sector in India which includes more investment in irrigation and subsidy for agricultural equipment.
 
The pre-budget meeting with the Finance Minister was held on June-5.

Among the issues highlighted were the need of increased investment in irrigation by the government as well as the private sector by irrigation bonds, subsidy of 50 per cent on all agriculture equipment; Rs 5000 crore budget for irrigation; and long term export policy on rice, wheat, sugar to develop its brand image.

Indian Society of Agribusiness Professionals (ISAP) has now circulated draft recommendations for inclusion in the Union Budget 2014-15, calling for feedback, Coordinator, ISAP Forum, Nilesh Arya said.
 
Some of the issues featured in the draft recommendations are establishment of Kissan TV Channel within 100 days; national priority for mechanisation in all commodities; water conservation as a national priority; immediate completion of irrigation projects and linking of rivers, linking of MGNREGA with agriculture; subsidy reforms, promotion of agriculture growth through technologies, investments and free market; and policies for various commodities.
 
The agricultural society has also called for financial and legal reforms; strengthening of agriculture research, farmer and industry partnership; and welfare programmes among others.
 
Further, to push the demands, ISAP is planning to engage intensively, with the members of Parliament across the country to mobilize their support on the issues.
 
Also, considering there is a need to develop a plan to cover a five year period, it has been proposed to invite representatives from the agro processing industry and other stakeholders to jointly work together towards this end.  (KNN/ES)
