FINER urges govt to bring back Freight Equalization Scheme to help steel industry

New Delhi, July 15 (KNN) Indian steel consumers are facing problems due to high prices of the metal in the country and have demanded to bring a policy intervention from the Central Government. Demand has been made to prevent steel producers from exporting steel below the domestic prices.

Several industry bodies have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking this intervention. It should be supplied at the rate which the domestic steel mills export the metal.

When KNN India spoke to Chairman of Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region (FINER), R S Joshi, he highlighted, “Due to high transport cost in eastern states of the country, the price of steel is more. Earlier, there was a Freight Equalization Scheme under which price used to be maintained the same in every part and even in remote areas. Now, this scheme is no more in operation so we are facing high prices of steel. We want that scheme should bring back in operation so that we can get material at an efficient price”.

Industries which are near to the plant are benefitted but refinery which is far away and raw material comes from a distance which results in high price. We urge that scheme should bring back in operation so that we can get material at an efficient price, he added. (KNN/VS)
