Chennai, Apr 26 (KNN) The Fisheries Department in Thengathittu Harbour of Puducherry finally got its own building, after operating for about sixty years from a small office in the Botanical Gardens.

The new building was constructed by the Project Implementation Agency funded by the World Bank. It will incorporate the Fisheries Department as well as the harbour building, a media report quoting Director of Fisheries G Ramalakshmi said.

The new fishermen welfare building constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore was inaugurated by the State Chief Minister N Rangasamy.   Since 1954, the Fisheries Department has not had a building on its own.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rangasamy encouraged the department to start their own canteen, since commuting to the harbour would be a problem.  On their part, the staff of the Fisheries Department requested the Chief Minister to start a bus service to the harbour.

Fisheries sector plays a vital role in the Indian economy through substantial forex earnings, employment generation to 5.96 million people and ensuring nutritional and food security.

Contribution of fisheries to total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at current prices is about 1.3 per cent.  There are 10,363 registered fisheries societies in India, with a membership of 11,22,000 people. (KNN)
