New Delhi, Sept 4 (KNN) Online retailer Flipkart has joined hands with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and will work to rope in local weavers and artisans who can take support from the fashion designing students about market trends and consumer interests.

Flipkart has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NIFT, which will help the students to use online retailers market intelligence and logistics expertise to develop private labels and also build on their entrepreneurial skills.

The first pilot of the project will begin over the next two weeks at Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency.

Out of NIFT’s 15 centres across the country, five — Hyderabad, Mumbai, Gandhinagar, Chennai and Delhi — have shown interest in being part of the project.

Flipkart staff will be sent to different cities to coordinate with the local artisans, who can also take support from fashion-designing students about market trends and consumer interests.

The focus will be on Banarasi saris, leather purses, bags and laptop and ipad covers.

According to the NIFT Director General Prem Kumar Gera, NIFT is involved with grass root level artisans across country, through its Academic Craft Clusters intervention. The missing linkage was students' access to market intelligence, market linkage and opportunities, which this association will provide, reports media.

Earlier, Flipkart had signed a memorandum of understanding with the labour ministry, textiles ministry and Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises. (KNN/SD)
