Foxconn Considers Expanding iPad Assembly in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, Jul 26 (KNN) In a move that could further solidify India's position as a key manufacturing hub for Apple products, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn is reportedly exploring the possibility of assembling iPads in the country.

This development marks a potential expansion of Foxconn's operations in India, which have thus far primarily focused on iPhone production.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Foxconn is "seriously looking to start assembling Apple iPads" at its facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, reported ET.

This step would represent a significant broadening of Apple's manufacturing footprint in India, which has until now been largely limited to smartphone assembly by Foxconn and other international contract manufacturers.

The move aligns with Apple's ongoing strategy to diversify its manufacturing operations away from China. The tech giant has already shifted some iPad production to Vietnam last year, and this potential expansion into India further underscores this trend.

Industry experts note that assembling iPads in India should be relatively straightforward for Foxconn, given its existing capabilities in iPhone production. "It (iPad) is like a bigger iPhone in essence.

So, it is something that can be assembled in India without too much trouble," an industry source told The Economic Times.

However, the assembly of Apple's Mac range of laptops in India may take longer to materialise due to limited production volumes, the report suggests.

The Indian government appears to be supportive of this potential expansion, with sources indicating that "several discussions with the government have already taken place."

Recent policy changes, such as the reduction of Basic Customs Duty on certain components from 20 per cent to 15 per cent in the latest budget, are expected to facilitate domestic manufacturing plans.

It's worth noting that Apple's previous attempts to manufacture iPads in India faced challenges due to government restrictions related to its partnership with Chinese company BYD. However, the current climate seems more favourable for such ventures.

While this development is still in the exploratory stage, it could represent a significant boost to India's electronics manufacturing sector and further cement the country's position in Apple's global supply chain.

As the situation evolves, industry watchers will be keenly observing the potential impact on both the local economy and Apple's global manufacturing strategy.
