New Delhi, Dec 16 (KNN)  In an effort to  boost tourism, the government has taken up various schemes to generate employment and has implemented tourism friendly policies.

“The Ministry of Tourism has advised the state governments and union territories (UT) administrations to follow tourism friendly policies like allotting land sites on revenue sharing basis, granting extra Floor Space Index (FSI), Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for hotels, creation of land banks, single window approach for promoting hotel projects, rationalization of taxes etc., for the growth of tourism sector in the country,” said Minister of State for Tourism K Chiranjeevi.

Further, to encourage the growth of hotels, the ministry has announced certain incentives like Five Year Tax Holiday for 2, 3 and 4 star category new hotels located in all UNESCO declared ‘World Heritage Sites’, investment linked deduction under Section 35 AD of the Income Tax Act extended for new hotels of 2-Star Category and above, expanding “Harmonized Master List of Infrastructure Sub-Sectors”, de-linked credit for hotel projects from Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and relaxation of External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) norms.

Meanwhile, the ministry has also planned to promote the north eastern (NE) states as attractive tourism destinations.

“The North Eastern Region (NER) of India, including the state of Sikkim, is a reservoir of rich natural resources and biodiversity and an amalgamation of different tribes and cultures. It is still a largely unexplored region having many tourism attractions in the form of wild life sanctuaries, adventure tourism assets, diverse cultural heritage, multifaceted fairs and festivals, world famous Buddhist monasteries, etc. It, therefore, has great potential for both domestic and international tourism,” he said.

The Ministry of Tourism has 14 offices overseas. The primary function of these offices is to position India as a preferred destination in important tourist markets and thus improve India’s share of the global tourism. (KNN/ST)
