New Delhi, Dec 9 (KNN)  As an initiative to improve food processing industries in the country, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) has launched a new centrally sponsored scheme National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) during  the 12th Plan.

The scheme to make the food processing industry globally competitive will be implemented through states and union territory (UT) governments.

Some of the ongoing schemes have been included in the NMFP in addition to the new components, said an official release from Ministry of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries.

“The major objective of the scheme is decentralisation of implementation of ministry’s schemes, which will lead to substantial participation of state/UT governments. This will not only provide better outreach for the schemes of the ministry but also allow the ministry to focus on policy issues relating to food processing sector,” said an official notification.

A booklet on state profile, “Opportunities in Agri Business” has been released to provide information, particularly to investors about infrastructure facilities for setting up food processing units, availability of raw materials, marketing infrastructure, sector specific state agencies and fiscal incentives in a user friendly mode.

The schemes included Mega Food Parks, Integrated Cold Chain, Value Addition and Preservation Infrastructure, setting up and modernization of abattoirs, technology up-gradation, establishment, modernization of food processing industries, quality assurance, codex, R&D and other promotional activities as well as human resource development.
