Govt rolls out strategy to maintain stocks of onions, MEP chalked at $850 per tonne

New Delhi, Nov 24 (KNN) In response to the instability in the price of onions in the country and the supply, the government announced fixing Minimum Export Price of onions at $850 per tonne or over 50,000 rupees.

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan informed of the latest decision through his official Twitter handle.

The Minister further said that the step is being taken in order to ensure domestic availability of onion and to discourage cheap export from the country in another tweet.

Earlier in a bid to keep a check on the prices of onions in the market, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution informed that a government agency would be appointed as approval authority talking care of import of onions in the country.

Also the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) along with Small Farmers’ Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) were designated to procure onions from the producing areas including the national capital to maintain availability, supply and prices. (KNN/DA)
