Govt to continue existing schemes to increase silk production

New Delhi, Sept 20 (KNN)  In a bid to increase silk production from the level of 23,060 metric tonnes in the 11th Plan to 32,000 metric tonnes in the 12th Plan, the government has approved the continuation of three central sector schemes of the Ministry of Textiles relating to sericulture today.  

“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the continuation of three central sector schemes of the Ministry of Textiles relating to sericulture sector,” said the Ministry of Textiles here.

The overall effort is to increase silk production from the level of 23,060 metric tonnes during the 11th Plan to 32,000 metric tonnes during the 12th Plan, it said.

Further, it has also approved Rs 115 crore from the overall allocation of Rs 375 crore to meet the skilled farm workers’ wage under the scheme.

The schemes comprise research and development, training, transfer of technology and information and technology initiative for which Rs 203.71 crore has been assigned.

It will also consist of market development and quality certification system for which Rs 159.44 crore and Rs 11.85 crore are allocated respectively. 

The schemes intend to improve the productivity and quality of silk through research and development. It will improve cross breed to produce better quality silk in India so as to import less.  

The quality certification system is continued to promote quality upgradation and create quality consciousness among producers and consumers of silk. (KNN/GUNJ)
