New Delhi, Apr 26 (KNN) The government is implementing international codex standards for quality assurance of processed foods apart from taking various initiatives for tapping the full potential of the sector.

“The Government had launched a centrally sponsored scheme – National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP) during 2012-13, the first year of the XII Five Year Plan,” said Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Charan Das Mahant in Rajya Sabha today.

NMFP focusses on establishment and modernisation of food processing industries, opening cold chain for value addition and preservation of infrastructure for non-horticultural products and various other promotional activities.

“Government has allocated Rs 5990 crore in the 12th plan for promotion of food processing industries,” Mahant said.

The Government is also in the process of implementing schemes of infrastructure development by opening mega food parks; integrated cold chain projects and abattoirs.

Problems faced by food processing industries include lack of cost-effective food machinery and packaging technologies,   constrains in raw material, inadequate infrastructural facilities and poor access to credit.

Significantly, food processing industry accounts for 14 per cent of manufacturing GDP, nearly 13 per cent of India’s exports and 6 per cent of total industrial investment.
With regard to Codex, it is short for "Codex Alimentarius", the Latin term for "food code" is an international food standards code developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), with its secretariat at Rome.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission, established by FAO and WHO in 1963 develops harmonised international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice to protect the health of the consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade. The Commission also promotes coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.  (KNN)
