Govt to focus on healthcare of handicraft artisans

New Delhi, Nov 6 (KNN)  Given the significant role the handicrafts sector plays in the country’s economy, the government has in place two schemes that cover insurance and health care of artisans and their families.
 
“Government has given adequate focus on the welfare of the Handicrafts Artisans through Handicrafts Artisans Comprehensive Welfare Scheme. The Scheme, Handicrafts Artisans Comprehensive Welfare Scheme has two components, Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Swastya Yojona and Bima Yojona for Handicrafts artisans which are aimed at Insurance Cover and Health Care of Handicrafts artisans and their families,” said an official notification.
 
As many as 5.5 lakh artisans have benefitted during 2013-14 under the Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Swasthya Bima Yojona for which funds amounting to Rs 309.33 crore were released.   The scheme provides health and insurance cover to an artisan’s family of four, including self and any three out of spouse, children and dependent parents.

As far as Bima Yojona for handicrafts artisans is concerned, a total of Rs 120.00 lakh rupees was released to LIC to benefit as many as 1,89,303 artisans during 2012-13.
 
The objective of this scheme is to provide life insurance protection to handicrafts artisans irrespective of gender between the age group of 18-60 years in case of natural or accidental death or total or partial disability due to accident.

The Handicrafts Sector provides employment to numerous artisans in rural and semi urban areas.   According to official data, as many as 68.86 lakhs crafts persons are engaged in this sector.   (KNN/ES)
