Govt to issue ID cards to handloom & handicraft artisans

New Delhi, Feb 11 (KNN)  The government is planning to issue identity cards to handloom and handicraft artisans and workers which at all India level in 2011-12 is estimated to be 68.86 lakh, their numbers, especially high in states such as Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, UP and Rajasthan.

According to official data, there were as many as 3,79,988 handloom artisans in Manipur as per all India census of 1995-96 and 218753 handloom and allied workers as at 2009-10.  The state is famous for products made of cane and bamboo as well as pottery, silk and shawls.

On the other hand in Jammu and Kashmir, there were 5,42,119 registered handloom artisans (1995-96) and 33209 handloom and allied workers as at 2009-10.  The Handloom sector in the state is centuries old, known for its specialized weaving of fabrics like Pashmina, Raffal, Silk Sarees and Cotton items.  Other products the region is famous for are Carpets, paper Mache, wood carving and pashmina shawls.

Some of the other states that have large numbers are Rajasthan with 4,07,700 artisans (1995-96) and 31958 handloom and allied workers (2009-10) and Uttar Pradesh with 1,176,529 artisans (1995-96) and 257783 handloom and allied workers (2009-10).

The labour intensive cottage industries in each of those states, plays a crucial role in employment generation for weaker section of the society.
 
The total number of artisans at all India level according to the 1995-96 census is 4,761,186 and the number of handloom and allied workers is 4,331,876, Minister of State for Textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi said in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
 
She said the Government is implementing the Schemes of Human Resource Development and Design and Technology Upgradation under which Handicraft artisans are being provided training. For handloom weavers training is provided under Integrated Handloom Development Scheme (IHDS), now comprehensive Handloom Development Scheme (CHDS) and Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS).  (KNN/ES)
