Govt to organise international seminar for promotion of handicrafts in Sept

The event will be jointly organized by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), Development Commissioner of Handicrafts and National Centre for Design and Product Development (NCDPD).
Further, international experts in different areas of technology have been invited from South-East Asia and other countries to study the existing bottlenecks in the handicrafts sector in the areas of production technology, NCDPD said.
India’s share in the world handicraft exports is less than 2 per cent. The sector provides employment to over 60 lakhs artisans which includes a large number of women and people belonging to weaker sections of the society.
During the event, experts will discuss customer oriented design for product development, new production techniques for manufacturing of handicrafts, measures to enhance skills at par with South-East Asian countries, marketing channels and tie-ups.
In order to share techniques, designs, patterns, processing, finishing etc, with craftsman and artisans, experts will demonstration programmes on crafts and advance technologies.
International and national artisans as well as craftsman have been invited for craft categories such as hand embroidery, eco-friendly crafts, wooden furniture, cane, bamboo and metal. They will discuss in detail and make demonstrations during the programme.
Handicrafts of India represent cultural tradition in the true sense, as an Indian way of life is replete with products made with the help of simple, indigenous tools by craftsman who belong within a strong fabric of tradition, aesthetics and artistry. (KNN/GUNJ)
