New Delhi, Nov 13 (KNN) Keeping in mind the need to upgrade the skills of textile workers/handloom weavers and develop competitiveness in the textile industry, the Ministry of Textiles will implement a scheme with an allocation of Rs 1900 crore under which 15 lakh people will be trained.

Towards this, the Ministry seeks management units for the execution and monitoring of the scheme.

“The Ministry of Textiles proposes to engage a project management unit (PMU) to assist the Ministry to execute and monitor the scheme for integrated skill development, scheme under the 12th Plan with the objective of training 15 lakh persons with an allocation of 1900 crores,” the Ministry said in a notification.

Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS) has been launched with the objective to build the capabilities of those institutions that currently provide training and skill development programmes in the textile and apparel sectors including jute and handicraft.

“The integrated textile scheme is really helping the industry to face the challenges of skilled labour shortage and making the sector more competitive in comparison to our competitors,” said an industry body official.

The scheme, he said, helps meet the manpower needs and increase employability of locals in the area, by imparting skills in textiles and related segments.

Appreciative of the government’s initiative toward the labour intensive sector, it has helped reduce migration, he said.

The textile sector contributes about 14 per cent to industrial production, 4 per cent to the GDP, and 17 per cent to the country's export earnings.  It provides direct employment to over 35 million people in India, holding the position of the second largest provider of employment after agriculture. Thus, the growth and all around development of this industry has a direct bearing on the nation’s economic strength. (KNN/SD)
