Govt Waives Customs Duty On Nuclear Power Equipment Imported Since 2019

New Delhi, Jun 12 (KNN) The Finance Ministry has waived customs duties on goods imported for nuclear power generation, extending retrospective tax relief to eligible imports made between April 1, 2019 and January 31, 2026.

Customs Duty Waiver Granted For Nuclear Power Imports

According to a government order issued on June 11, the exemption applies to specified goods imported for nuclear power projects under designated customs tariff categories, reported Business Standard.

The move is expected to reduce project costs for nuclear power operators and equipment suppliers by providing duty relief on imports used in the sector during the nearly seven-year period.

The latest decision follows the Union Budget 2026 announcement, in which the government extended customs duty exemptions on imports required for nuclear power projects until 2035 as part of its broader clean energy strategy.

Nuclear Energy Positioned As Key To Clean Energy Transition

The retrospective exemption is aimed at supporting the expansion of India's nuclear energy sector, which is expected to play a larger role in the country's long-term energy transition plans.

The government has identified nuclear power as a key component of its clean energy roadmap and has set a target of achieving 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047.

Lower Import Costs May Boost Future Investments

The duty waiver could improve project economics and facilitate investments in upcoming nuclear power projects by lowering the cost of imported equipment and components.

The measure is also expected to support the timely execution of nuclear energy projects as India seeks to diversify its energy mix and strengthen low-carbon power generation capacity.
