With a view to providing better marketing opportunities for the handicrafts items produced by the Shilp Gurus, National Awardees, and State Awardees, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) allocated a showroom comprising of as many as 21 ready built stalls at the Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhawan where their products will be showcased.
The basic objective is to improve sale of the handicrafts products produced by them and provide livelihood on sustainable basis to the craftsmen, as they have very limited marketing opportunities available with them and therefore, despite intricate craftsmanship and exquisite skills, their products do not get their due, according to a statement.
In order to enhance sale of products in a professional manner, the showroom presently being managed by Council of Handicrafts Development Corporation (COHANDS) will be now run on “Shop-N-Shop” concept, which means that the showroom shall be run by the artisans purely on professional and market oriented manner.
However, the overall management of the showroom will remain with COHANDS including billing and collection of daily sale proceeds, maintenance etc.
In this context, the DC-Handicrafts has invited bids from the artisans to book their stalls.
Also, there will be minimum sale guarantee of Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 per month for each allottee, based on the type of stall.
The exports of handicrafts (other than hand knotted carpets) from India accounted for Rs 17970.12 crore in year 2012-13. (KNN/SD)
