Handloom community might feel sadened if PM Modi does not attend Handloom Day: Industry

Hyderabad, July 25 (KNN) Venkanna Netha, a designer who conceived the idea of National Handloom day, has urged Prime  Minister Narendra Modi to take part in the National Handloom Day celebrations in August.

PM Modi will be in Telangana to inaugurate the Mega Textile Park on August 7th 2016.

In a letter written to Modi, he said “Of late the handloom community has been let down as their unique traditional heritage design knowledge is abused by the copying and imitation that is happening so rampantly by the textile mills and power-loom sectors which is also badly affecting their livelihoods and self-reliance.

Though it was not intended and mere coincidence, if you do not participate in the National handloom day celebrations along with the Textile Park inauguration on ensuing August 7th 2016, the handloom community may feel left out and sadened,” he added.

He requested the PM to participate in Handloom Day celebrations to give fillip and motivation to handloom weavers of Telangana and across the nation.

In his letter to PM Modi, he said that handloom became a key instrument in the freedom struggle and the same handlooms have to play a very significant role in creating jobs and employment.

"You also stated that nearly after 110 years, handlooms are getting the prominence again that is due to them," mentioned the letter.

The concept of handloom day that originated in Telangana in 2006 snowballed into a movement that led to the declaration of national handloom day after 9 years of relentless efforts.

"There can’t be a better coincidence and auspicious moment as you are coming here on the same day and I am elated of the same," said the letter.

“It is a privilege to welcome you heartily to our newly formed state, Telangana as you are setting your foot on it for the first time after a substantial gap,” it said. (KNN Bureau)
