New Delhi, Mar 8 (KNN) The textiles ministry has amended hank yarn packaging norms whereby yarn packed for civil consumption in each quarter commencing from January-March should be less than 30 per cent of total yarn packed in each quarterly period for civil consumption.

However, not less than 80% of the yarn required to be packed in hank form shall be of counts 80s and below, said Ministry of Textiles.

Previously, this proportion was 40 per cent of the total yarn packed. The move is expected to benefit spinning industry.

"This notification will come into effect from January 1, 2019," an official statement said.

Though the industry experts requested for removal of hank yarn obligation as no country has hank yarn obligation in the world, including Pakistan and Bangladesh whereas India is carrying the burden with 40 per cent hank yarn obligation for spinners and increasing yarn prices for the Indian weaver.

In a move, government however not removed the obligation but reduced the burden.

In the textile industry, a hank is a coiled or wrapped unit of yarn or twine. (KNN/YV)
