Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir to get NIFT centres

New Delhi, 29 Apr (KNN) Soon there will be two more centres of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The new centres are coming up in Panchkula and Budgam, as the state governments have allotted land for the construction of the campus.

“The Board of Governors (BOG) of NIFT has sanctioned proposal for the establishment of NIFT centres in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir,” said the Minister of State Textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi in the Lok Sabha today.

The Government of Haryana has agreed to provide 15 acres of land at Panchkula and financial assistance to the tune of Rs 99.71 crore.

These funds will also be covering the revenue deficits for running the centres for the initial three years.

Similarly, “the state government of Jammu and Kashmir has also allotted 20 acres of land in Budgam for NIFT centre. It is expected by the year 2016,” said the minister.

The state government has released Rs 2.50 crore for initial activities. It has identified State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (SIDCO) as its agency for the construction of project.

Lakshmi said, “Ministry of Textiles has agreed to bear 50 per cent of the cost of infrastructure for setting up of centre in Jammu and Kashmir and 35 per cent quota would be provided to the residents or domicile of the state.”

Meanwhile, the board of governors of NIFT have given approval for the opening of a new centre in Chhattisgarh.

Currently, there are 15 NIFT centres at Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, Raebareli and Shillong.

In addition, Punjab, Tripura, Mizoram, Goa and Assam had sent their requests for establishing new NIFT campuses in their states. (KNN)
