Varanasi, May 31 (KNN) To facilitate handloom weavers, a camp was organised by the district administration and handloom department in weaver dominated Lohta area here.

Weavers along with their families assembled in large numbers at the camp to receive benefits of schemes such as handloom weaver credit card, weaver identity card and health insurance scheme.

According to a report from the Ministry of Textiles, as a social security measure, the Government of India has been implementing Handloom Weavers' Comprehensive Welfare Scheme for weavers with components like health insurance scheme and Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana for life insurance cover.

The health insurance scheme covers the health expenses of a weaver and his family including his wife and two children. The annual limit per family of the scheme is Rs 15,000 out of which Rs 7,500 is only for out-patient department (OPD) charges.  Besides handloom weavers, ancillary handlooms workers are also eligible for benefit under the scheme.

While the central government pays 80 per cent of the premium the remaining 20 per cent is paid by the state government with a minimum contribution of Rs 50 to be paid by the weaver.

On the other hand, the Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana scheme provides insurance cover to handloom weavers in case of natural or accidental death and disability. This scheme also provides scholarship for two children under the 'Shiksha Sahayog Yojana' to the extent of Rs 300 per quarter per child.

In addition, for the overall development of the handloom sector and handloom weavers, the central government has taken up various other policy initiatives and schemes like cluster approach, technological upgradation, marketing promotion, revival of viable and potentially viable societies through loan waiver and recapitalisation assistance, availability of subsidised yarn and credit.

According to the assistant director of handloom department, K P Verma, as many as 450 forms were submitted for weavers identity cards out which 140 identity cards were made on the spot.  The remaining identity cards would be issued to weavers in a week.

"For credit cards, as many as 76 weavers submitted forms while 73 forms were received for yarn pass book," said Verma adding that 22 forms were received for handloom parts distribution.  The parts would be supplied to them in a month.

The Lohta area, which has a population of about 80,000, lacks basic needs like primary health centre and proper water supply system.  (KNN)
