New Delhi, Jul 2 (KNN)  In an attempt to protect national heritage and develop new tourism destinations the Ministry of Tourism has decided to provide central financial assistance for the development of heritage lighthouses around the country.

Union Minister for Tourism, K Chiranjeevi announced the decision after discussions with Minister for Shipping, K Wasan and Minister of State for Shipping, Communication and Information Technology, Milind Deora.

“Out of fifteen heritage lighthouses having historical importance, in the first phase, Konhoji Angere lighthouse in Maharashtra will be taken up for development.  The Ministry of Tourism plans to support construction of a boat jetty and passenger terminal at Konhoji Angere lighthouse,” said an official notification.

Once the jetty is built, Mumbaikars, domestic and international tourists will have a new destination to go to for a day’s trip.  The Konhoji Angere Island is situated nine nautical miles away from the Gateway of India, Mumbai.

It is expected that the development of lighthouses will create new interest about maritime history.  Further, it will help develop cruise tourism in the country.

Even as various stakeholders in the Tourism and Maritime industry have hailed this decision of the Government, the two Ministries are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard shortly.  (KNN)
