New Delhi, Jul 31 (KNN) Deserts in India have a total available potential of 315.7 GW of solar and wind power and and investment of Rs 43,74,550 crore would be required for harnessing the available potential upto 2050, according to a study report.

“The Government proposes to tap into the country’s solar and wind energy potential lying unexplored in the deserts,” Minister of state for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

“For this, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had assigned a study to the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) to identify likely renewable power potential in desert regions in the states of Rajasthan (Thar), Gujarat (Rann of Kutch), Himachal Pradesh (Lahul and Spiti) and Jammu and Kashmir ( Ladakh).

“In December 2013, the PGCIL submitted a study report titled “Desert Power India- 2050” assessing renewable power potential, transmission infrastructure requirement, balancing reserve etc in the identified desert regions,” he said.

The report has assessed a total available potential of 315.7 GW of solar and wind power in these regions. The report has further estimated that the investment requirement for harnessing the available potential up to 2050 would be Rs 43,74,550 crores, the Minister added.

Further, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing ‘Information and Public Awareness Programme’ to create publicity of the renewable technologies, systems and devices as well as disseminate information on technological developments in the country.

The programme is implemented mainly through State Nodal Agencies, Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), National Film Development Corporation of India and All India Radio. The Ministry is also making use of electronic, print and outdoor publicity media for popularizing renewable energy.

The Minister further stated that as a result of these programmes, a large number of renewable energy systems have been installed in the country. These include about 47.40 lakh family size biogas plants, 174 megawatt solar photovoltaic decentralized/off-grid systems and 81.5 lakh square meters collector area of solar water heating systems. In addition, about 31,833 megawatt of grid connected renewable power projects have also been set up in the country.

In addition, under off-grid and decentralized solar applications scheme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM), the Ministry provides 30 per cent capital subsidy which ranges from Rs 27 per watt peak to Rs 135 per watt peak for installation of solar photovoltaic systems depending upon their capacity and configurations including rural and tribal population of the country for domestic irrigation and education purposes, the Minister added.
