New Delhi, Sep 14 (KNN) In order to boost the electronic system design and manufacturing, the government has approved plans for setting up two semiconductor fabrication units in the country which is appreciated by the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA).

The outlay of the proposed semiconductor wafer fabrication (FAB) is about Rs 25,250 crore.

Welcoming the proposal, President of IESA, PVG Menon said, “The association believes that the fabrication units will be highly strategic game changer for India. We look at the fab as India building strategic technology capability that will leapfrog the country ahead by several years, in development of indigenous electronic products and aid in the development of a local fabless semiconductor industry.

Further, the presence of a local fab in India would boost the country’s capability to build intellectual property assets within India, he said.

“We reiterate that in terms of its impact and implications, the fab must be treated on par with India’s investments in space and nuclear programmes,” Menon said.

Meanwhile, the semiconductor wafer fabrication units when set up will stimulate the flow of capital and technology, create employment opportunities, help higher value addition in the electronic products manufactured in the country, reduce dependence on imports and lead to innovation.

The proposed fabrication units will create direct employment of about 22,000 and indirect employment of about one lakh.

Earlier, the government had constituted an empowered committee in 2011 to identify technology, investors and recommend incentives to be provided to set up two FAB facilities in the country.

The committee has issued a global expression of interest inviting technology providers and investors to set up the facilities. This committee submitted its recommendations to the government in March 2013. (KNN/GUNJ)
