New Delhi, Sept 21 (KNN) India has asked Russia for regulatory simplification for supply of Indian generic medicines to the Russian market.

The issue was taken up by Commerce and Industry Minister, Anand Sharma during the Seventh India Russia Forum on Trade and Investment held in St. Petersburg.

“As Indian pharmaceutical companies are keen to establish manufacturing bases in Russia, it is imperative that Russian government should address their concerns in an expeditious manner,” said Sharma.

During his meetings with Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Rogozin, and Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov, Sharma pressed for market access for Indian products.

Pharmaceutical products figured very high on the agenda and the minister asked for regulatory simplification for supply of Indian generic medicines to Russia, according to a Commerce Ministry release here.

Earlier, India has requested Russia to examine the issues troubling the Indian pharmaceutical companies during 19th India-Russia Working Group on Trade and Economic Cooperation (IRWGTEC) meeting in Moscow.

Both the countries have developed a framework for tracking priority projects at the ministerial level to work jointly on hi-tech manufacturing areas.

The sectors covered under joint understanding and priority investment projects for enhancing cooperation are automobile, road-building machinery, pharmaceuticals, energy, information and technology, agro, processed foods etc.

Further, Russian companies in the power sector are keen to participate in modernization of old power plants and engineering units based in India.

Sharma informed Russia about the recent liberalization in foreign direct investment (FDI) regime in India.

The visit assumes significance in the light of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s forthcoming visit to Russia next month. (KNN/GUNJ)
