New Delhi, Oct 13 (KNN) India exported around 7.75 lakh tonnes of sugar during the 2024–25 marketing year (October–September), according to the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA).
The government had permitted sugar exports starting January 20, 2025, with a total export quota of 10 lakh tonnes for the year.
Between February and September 2025, sugar mills shipped approximately 6.13 lakh tonnes of white sugar, 1.04 lakh tonnes of refined sugar, and 33,338 tonnes of raw sugar.
In addition, around 21,000 tonnes of raw sugar were supplied to Special Economic Zone (SEZ) refineries, which are considered deemed exports.
The main export destinations were Djibouti (1.46 lakh tonnes), Somalia (1.35 lakh tonnes), and Sri Lanka (1.34 lakh tonnes), followed by Afghanistan (75,533 tonnes).
These markets accounted for a major share of India’s sugar exports during the season.
AISTA noted that the final export volume closely matched its earlier projection of 8 lakh tonnes.
The association has urged the government to announce the export quota for the 2025–26 sugar season by November 2025, to ensure smoother trade operations and better planning for sugar mills.
The body also recommended that the government continue using the same quota allocation and inter-mill trading policy as adopted in the current season to maintain consistency in the export process.
India is one of the world’s largest producers and consumers of sugar, and export decisions are closely monitored due to their impact on domestic availability and prices.
