India generates business worth USD 32.4 million from garment fair in Tokyo

New Delhi, Jul 27 (KNN)  Indian apparel exporters have generated business worth USD 32.4 million from the JFW International Fashion Fair (IFF), held recently in Tokyo.

"India Pavilion has witnessed over 1900 buyers and the business negotiated/ done was USD 32.4 million," Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), A Sakthivel said in a press statement recently.

Significantly, garment exports during the period 2012 were USD 293 Mn as compared to USD 270 Mn in 2011, posting a positive growth of 8.11 per cent.  The first time visitors were hopeful of generating business in long term.  Considering this, it is expected that overall growth in business with Japan may be over 10 per cent, Sakthivel added. 
 
Apparel Export Promotion Council in active collaboration with Embassy of India, Japan, participated with 136 companies, constituting over 20 per cent share in overall participation in JFW International Fashion Fair, Tokyo held from July 17-19, 2013.

Furthermore, India and Japan had signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) effective 1st August, 2011.  India's garment exports to Japan have shown a substantial growth after signing of the CEPA.

Exports of woven apparels in the period 2005-2010 to Japan was minus 3.7 per cent, which has grown to plus 4.6 per cent between 2011-2012, registering exports of USD 210 Million.

Similarly, exports of knitted apparels in the period 2005-2010 to Japan was minus 0.2 per cent, which has grown to plus 10.5 per cent between 2011-2012, registering exports of USD 83 Million.

Textiles exports to Japan from the world are estimated at USD 41.54 billion.  Apparel exports were worth USD 32.07 billion in 2012.  India’s export of textiles was worth USD 485 million. (KNN/SD)
