The stand which India is expected to take was decided at a meeting of the committee of secretaries headed by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth here.
Problems related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) with the United States, especially in the pharmaceutical sector were discussed at the high level meeting.
IPR laws in India, according to reports are fully compliant with WTO and other international norms. Thus, any unilateral decision taken by the US can amount to violation and India will not hesitate to drag the US to WTO’s dispute resolution mechanism.
In a recent development, India’s ambassador to the US has recommended that the government engage in a dialogue with US pharma companies and listen to their concerns.
Of late, according to reports, some US pharma companies have intensified pressure on their government to label India as a 'Priority Foreign Country', which may trigger adverse policy action against India.
These companies claim that India's IPR regime violates international norms and discriminates against them. (KNN/ES)
