Worried over the increasing number of rejection of consignments at the pack houses, the Commerce Ministry has now imposed stricter inspection and certification process.
The exports of all consumable items to the European Union have to go through recognised pack-houses under the vigilance of plant protection inspectors to improve the quality, reports media.
EU has recently banned export of five fruits and vegetables from India as pests were found in some consignments.
The EU’s Standing Committee on Plant Health imposed a ban on Indian mangoes, bitter gourd, taro, egg plant and snake gourd, as pests and insects were detected in a number of consignments shipped from the country.
According to the media report, the EU has been asked to send its team of experts to see the improved inspection and quality certification process and lift its export ban.
In case, the EU is not satisfied with the India’s stricter norms to improve quality, it could extend the band to other perishable goods as well.
EU’s ban has affected India’s 5 per cent of the total exports of perishables to the European Union. (KNN/SD)
