Indian Railways Approves Rs 405 Crore Signalling Upgrade Project on Eastern Railway
New Delhi, Jun 18 (KNN) Indian Railways has approved a Rs 405 crore signalling modernisation project on Eastern Railway to enhance safety, reliability and operational efficiency on some of the network's busiest routes.
The project involves replacing existing relay-based interlocking systems with Electronic Interlocking (EI) at 32 locations, including 25 Panel Interlocking (PI)/Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) stations and 7 Intermediate Block Signalling (IBS) locations situated on High Density Network (HDN) and Highly Utilised Network (HUN) routes.
The upgrade is aimed at addressing limitations associated with ageing signalling infrastructure, including outdated relay technology, higher maintenance requirements and increased risk of system failures.
Electronic Interlocking systems use digital technology to manage train movements and signalling operations with greater precision and reliability.
The new systems are expected to improve fault detection, reduce signalling failures and enable faster restoration of services in the event of disruptions.
According to Indian Railways, the modernisation will support smoother train operations and strengthen safety standards for both passenger and freight services on heavily trafficked corridors.
The project is also aligned with the Railways' broader plan to modernise signalling infrastructure and facilitate the deployment of advanced technologies such as Kavach, Automatic Block Signalling and Centralised Traffic Control across high-density routes.
The signalling upgrade is expected to improve system reliability, enhance operational performance and support future capacity expansion on the Eastern Railway network.
