India’s First Hydrogen Train Crosses 1,200 Km, Cuts Diesel Use by Over 3,200 Litres

New Delhi, Jul 27 (KNN) India’s first hydrogen-powered train, flagged off on the Jind–Sonipat route on July 17, 2026, has travelled over 1,200 kilometres and saved more than 3,200 litres of diesel.

The train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The process produces water vapour as a by-product, with no smoke or tailpipe carbon emissions during operation.

The 10-coach train, developed as an indigenous Indian Railways project, is equipped with two hydrogen driving power cars with a combined power output of 2,400 kW. The system is supported by lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders.

Hydrogen is stored at pressures of up to 500 bar and dispensed at 350 bar. The dedicated facility at Jind has a storage capacity of around 3,000 kg of hydrogen.

The train is equipped with multiple safety systems for detecting leaks, heat, flames and smoke, along with automatic shut-off systems and continuous ventilation.

Following its operation on the Jind–Sonipat route, trials on the Delhi route are scheduled to begin soon.
