India's leather export reaches USD 500 million, up by 12.6% in August

New Delhi, Nov 2 (KNN) Rising demand from the West has led to India’s leather exports reach USD 500 million in August, showing an increase of 12.6 per cent year-on-year.
According to the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), last year, in August the country’s leather export was at USD 444 million.

The leather industry holds a prominent place in the Indian economy. This sector is known for its consistency in high export earnings and it is among the top ten foreign exchange earners for the country.

The major markets for Indian leather and its products are the US, the UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain.

The exporters are exploring the new emerging markets including Latin America, Australia, Russia and Japan for reducing the dependence on the traditional markets and for creating the niche for the products in new ones, according to a media report quoting CLE official.

During April-August this year, leather exports grew by 13.60 per cent to USD 2.3 billion as compared to the same period last year.

The leather industry is an employment intensive sector, providing job to about 2.5 million people, mostly from the weaker sections of the society. Women employment is predominant in leather products sector with about 30 per cent share.

The council is hopeful that the leather exports will reach USD 14 billion level by 2017 which may help double jobs in the sector to 5 million.

The major production centers for leather and leather products in India are located in Tamil Nadu- Chennai, Ambur, Ranipet, Vaniyambadi, Vellore, Pernambut, Trichy, Dindigul and Erode ; West Bengal – Kolkata ; Uttar Pradesh – Kanpur, Agra, Noida, Saharanpur; Maharashtra – Mumbai ;Punjab – Jallandhar ; Karnataka – Bangalore ; Andhra Pradesh - Hyderabad ; Haryana  - Ambala, Gurgaon, Panchkula, Karnal and Faridabad; Delhi; Madhya Pradesh – Dewas ; Kerala – Calicut and Ernakulam / Cochin

Though India is the second largest producer of footwear and leather garments in the world, India accounts for a share of close to 3 per cent in the global leather import trade of    USD 137.96 billion (2010).

During the 2012-13 fiscal, leather exports grew over 4 per cent year-on-year to USD 5 billion. (KNN/SD)
