India's Non-Fossil Power Capacity Crosses 300 GW, Reaches 60% Of 2030 Target
New Delhi, Aug 10 (KNN) India has crossed 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, achieving 60 percent of its 500 GW target set for 2030, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said.
As of July 31, 2026, India’s non-fossil fuel capacity stood at 300.50 GW, comprising 164.59 GW of solar, 58.14 GW of wind, 57.24 GW of hydropower, 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear power.
Non-fossil fuel sources now account for more than 54 percent of India’s total installed power generation capacity of around 552 GW, reported PTI.
Solar Leads India’s Clean Energy Expansion
Solar power has emerged as the primary driver of India’s clean energy expansion, with installed capacity rising to around 165 GW from 2.8 GW in 2014. Wind power capacity has also increased to over 58 GW from 21 GW during the same period.
India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity in 2025-26, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity.
Renewable energy generation has also more than doubled, rising from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26.
Domestic Manufacturing Capacity Expands
The government has also expanded domestic manufacturing capabilities to support the growth of renewable energy and reduce supply chain dependence.
The capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar photovoltaic modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014.
The ministry attributed the expansion partly to the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme aimed at promoting high-efficiency, domestically manufactured solar modules.
The ministry said the clean energy transition is increasingly linked to India’s industrial competitiveness, energy security and economic resilience.
It is also implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission to promote industrial decarbonisation and position India as a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
