India’s textile sector needs 17 million additional workforce by 2022: MoT

New Delhi, Dec 21 (KNN) India’s textile sector which is considered as one of the biggest source of employment generation, needs 17 million additional workforce by 2022, said Textile Ministry.

With a huge raw material base and manufacturing strength across all value chains, India’s textile industry is one of the largest in the world, it added.

The ministry said in the last four years, 8.58 lakh persons have been trained in partnership with 58 government and industry partners to meet the sector's need for a skilled workforce.

“Ministry has formulated various measures to enhance the quality of Indian Textiles to international standards and to upgrade the skill of the workers,” said Ajay Tamta, Union Minister of State for Textiles.

The sector employs over 45 million people and there will be additional requirement of about 17 million by the year 2022, it added.

Further, it added “To boost indigenous production and Make in India, government has increased basic customs duty from 10% to 20% on 501 textile products.”
