New Delhi, Nov 15 (KNN) The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoFE) has prohibited six state governments from carrying out industrial development activities including mining, quarrying and setting up thermal power plants in the 60,000sq km ecologically sensitive area (ESA) of Western Ghats.

Around 37 per cent of the landscape has been identified as ESA on the basis of the recommendation of a committee under the chairmanship of Planning Commission member K Kasturirangan.

Building and construction projects of 20,000 sq meters area and above and development projects with an area of 50 hectares and above or with built up area of 1,50,000 sq meters and above will be prohibited in these areas.

The notification ordered the governments of Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu to implement appraisal strictly.

“In case of any violation, appropriate legal action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 shall be taken,” it said.

The Kasturirangan panel has recommended “non-tolerance policy” towards highly interventionist and environmentally damaging activities in the Western Ghats which is under unprecedented threats due to mining and urbanisation.  (KNN/ST)
