New Delhi, May 30 (KNN) With most of the states reeling under power shortages, the spot rates of power at the energy exchange have shot-up even as the peak rate has gone up five times the regular tariff.

The worst sufferers of the power crisis are the industries, particularly in the south where the deficit is quite high.

While the deficit figures for May have not been released so far, the deficit in April was as high as 20.5 per cent in Andhra Pradesh, 17.8 per cent in Karnataka and 19.4 per cent in Tamil Nadu, as per the figures compiled by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

The small and medium enterprises in the energy deficit states which include Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan are left with the expensive proposition of generating power from diesel.

Even the large industries in Tamil Nadu and other southern states have been hit hard resulting in scaling down in production.

The power shortages are being felt at a time when the energy tariffs have been raised by the distribution companies which also are compelled to buy power from spot trading exchanges at a very high rate.

While the spot power traders make huge gains, the consumers end-up paying more but continue to suffer due to outages for several hours a day.

Industries associations have been pleading unsuccessfully with the state government to improve the power situation as temperatures rise, particularly in north India.  (KNN)
