New Delhi, Apr 25 (KNN) Highlighting its superior environment friendly qualities and better product features, government, policy makers, industrial leaders, steel manufacturers and end user segments from the country are trying to promote steel slag as an alternative construction material.

Steel slag is a by-product of the steel making process. Depending on the stage or type of steel making process, the slag generated is called high sulphur slag, LD slag, LF slag or electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, official data said.

Global precedents, especially in Europe, show that steel slag, and in particular LD and EAF Slag are being used extensively in place of natural aggregates.  It is used for road construction, as rail ballast, for land and mine fill, in cement manufacture, in paver blocks and bricks and in treating soils for making them fit for agriculture.

The material has been found to be environmentally superior to the traditional material in many ways.

Considering the inherent advantages of steel slag over natural material both from usage and environment perspective, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has taken the initiative of promoting the awareness and usage of steel slag in the country.

The federation today organised a seminar under the theme ‘Promoting awareness and usage of steel slag - Ushering a new era.’

The event is serving the dual objectives of reaching out to the government agencies for necessary amendments in the regulations and of making the end user segments aware about the steel slag usage and benefits.

The conference focused upon the overall benefits of slag adoption and the technical session highlighting the chemical properties, environment friendly and cost benefits of slag.

It also highlighted a case study adoption of steel slag in India. The technical sessions are followed by a panel discussion highlighting user myths and queries and how the same can be resolved. (KNN/ST)
