New Delhi, Nov 11 (KNN)  Describing innovation as a change that leads to a new value dimension, Secretary General, Federation of Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME), Anil Bhardwaj, presented the concluding remarks on Innovation.

He was speaking at the National Conference on ‘Accelerating Technology Innovation for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth,’ organised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) here on November-7.

According to him, firstly, the idea of research as a solitary pursuit is based on fantasy. In reality research is a highly collaborative effort involving both internal and external knowledge sources.

“Whether institutions or companies, they have to make conscious efforts to make linkages with diversified fields of learnings as most disruptive innovations have sprung from most unlikely places,” he said.

Secondly, in realms of business commercialization is the ultimate test. The research has to be commercially viable and successful.  Public institutions engaged in industrial research must pass this test.

Thirdly, as Peter Drucker would say, innovation is work. There is a need to create an innovation eco-system consciously.  At the core of such a system is the holy-alliance of Government-Academia-Industry while its outer shell consists of the financial institutions to provide risk capital, enabling and affordable Intellectual Property regime and social norms which encourage creativity.

Resource persons at the event included Union Minister for Science and Technology S Jaipal Reddy, Secretary DSIR and DG CSIR Samir K Brahmachari, Chairman and Managing Director BHEL, B P Rao, President INAE Baldev Raj, Member – National Innovation Council, Kiran Karnik, Professor IIT Madras, Ashok Jhunjhunwala and Secretary MSME, Madhav Lal among others.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) is a part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, which has a mandate to carry out the activities relating to indigenous technology promotion, development, utilization and transfer. (KNN)
